Review
Ahoy, folks! Have ye ever seen a flick so thrilling and mind-bending that it leaves ye gasping for breath? Well, I just did. It goes by the name of “The Hidden Face,” and lemme tell ye, it’s a doozy.
The movie starts off innocently enough. A young and beautiful Spanish orchestra conductor named Adrián (Quim Gutiérrez) answers an ad for a caretaker of a secluded mansion in Bogota, Colombia. He lands the job, and things seem to be going swimmingly until his girlfriend Belén (Clara Lago) disappears without a trace. In her wake, she leaves behind not only her personal effects but also a series of cryptic letters that set off a chain reaction of events that’ll have ye questioning what’s real and what’s not.
Enter Fabiana (Martina García), the enigmatic woman who takes Belén’s place as Adrián’s lover. As he falls deeper into her arms, strange occurrences start happening within the house – doors slamming shut on their own, ghostly wailings in the night, and unexplainable smells wafting through the air.
Just when ye think ye’ve got it all figured out, director Andrés Baiz throws ye for another loop with his tale of love, betrayal, manipulation, and revenge. And before ye know it, the movie asks ye the age-old question: how far would you go for love?
The movie is shot entirely in Colombia with a cast of Spanish-speaking actors. Gutiérrez plays Adrián with vulnerability and desperation that makes him all too relatable. García’s Fabiana is equal parts seductive and sinister as she slowly unravels her twisted plan.
But the real star of “The Hidden Face” is its cinematography. Colombian cinematographer José Luis Alcaine creates an atmosphere that feels both claustrophobic and opulent. The mansion’s sprawling rooms are juxtaposed against Adrián’s cramped living quarters, and the camera angles constantly shift to keep ye on edge.
The score, composed by Spanish musician Roque Baños, is haunting and melancholic, adding another layer of complexity to an already multi-layered film.
Critics have praised “The Hidden Face” for its tight pacing and intricate plot. The movie has won numerous awards including Best Director at the 2011 Goya Awards and Best Foreign Language Film at the 2013 Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards.
But don’t just take my word for it. Here are some quotes from other critics about “The Hidden Face”:
“Director Andrés Baiz delivers one of the most enjoyable thrillers of the year with ‘The Hidden Face.’ A cinematic feast with a perfect balance between style and substance.” – Variety
“The Hidden Face places a telenovela-style story inside an ornate, heavy-breathing framework that would do Brian De Palma proud.” – NPR
“If you’re up for a sinister game with very high stakes, ‘The Hidden Face’ is sure to delight.” – The New York Times
All in all, “The Hidden Face” is a rollercoaster ride that’ll have ye questioning everything up to its jaw-dropping conclusion. So grab some popcorn and settle in for one helluva night at the movies!
