In his masterful novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote, “Nobody deserves your tears, but whoever deserves them will not make you cry.” This quote rings true in the Japanese film “Vengeance Is Mine,” directed by Shohei Imamura. This haunting and complex film is a gripping tale that explores the nature of revenge and the consequences of our actions.
Based on the real-life story of serial killer Akira Nishiguchi, “Vengeance Is Mine” follows Iwao Enokizu (played brilliantly by Ken Ogata), a cold-blooded killer who preys on those around him with as much ease as he devours his next meal. But unlike most murderers who are driven by clear motives or revenge, Iwao is difficult to peg down. He kills people he does not even know, seemingly for no reason at all.
The film’s opening scene shows Iwao in handcuffs being led away by police. As he sits in his cell awaiting trial for murder, we see flashbacks of his life leading up to this moment. Throughout these scenes, we learn about his strained relationship with his father (Rentaro Mikuni), who consistently belittles him and abuses him emotionally and physically.
Iwao’s first murder victim is a woman he meets at a bar. They have sex before he strangles her to death with her own belt. From there, Iwao embarks on a killing spree that takes him across Japan and into different social circles and situations.
But despite the gruesome nature of the killings (including one particularly disturbing scene involving a decapitated head), Imamura never resorts to cheap thrills or gratuitous violence. Instead, he gives us an intimate look into the mind of a killer who is both terrifyingly unpredictable and surprisingly relatable.
One of the most fascinating aspects of “Vengeance Is Mine” is how it examines the psychology of a murderer. Iwao is not a typical killer who enjoys the act of killing or feels no remorse for his actions. Instead, he seems to be driven by a deep-seated anger and resentment that he cannot quite put into words. He tells one victim, “I’m killing you because you’re doing the same thing my father did.”
Throughout the film, we see Iwao interacting with different women, including his wife and mistress. These relationships are complicated and fraught with tension, as Iwao struggles to connect with anyone on an emotional level.
The film’s score adds a haunting quality to the proceedings, with atonal piano chords underscoring many of the more tense or violent scenes. Meanwhile, Imamura’s direction is masterful, capturing both the beauty and bleakness of Japan’s landscapes.
Ken Ogata gives an unforgettable performance as Iwao, bringing a quiet intensity to every scene he is in. We see him transform from a meek and unassuming man into a ruthless killer with chilling ease.
While “Vengeance Is Mine” was not a commercial success upon its initial release in Japan in 1979, it has since become regarded as one of Imamura’s strongest works and an important film in Japanese cinema history. It won multiple awards at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979 and was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
The film also explores themes that have relevance today – the nature of revenge and how it can consume us if we let it; how we are all capable of committing terrible acts if pushed far enough; how society often fails those who need help the most.
As Marquez wrote, “There is always something left to love.” Even in a film as dark and disturbing as “Vengeance Is Mine,” there are moments of compassion and humanity that shine through. It is this balance between light and darkness that makes this film so compelling and unforgettable.
