Once upon a time, there was an unusual hotel that stood on the edge of a small village. This was no ordinary hotel, but a place where the eccentric Berry family lived. The Hotel New Hampshire is a film that offers a glimpse into the world of this family, their history and their struggles.
The film is based on John Irving’s novel of the same name and was released in 1984. It is directed by Tony Richardson and stars Jodie Foster as Franny Berry, Rob Lowe as John Berry and Beau Bridges as their father Win Berry. The movie takes place over several years and spans different locations, from New Hampshire to Vienna.
The story opens with a glimpse into the history of the Berry family. We learn that Win lost his wife in a car accident while they were driving to pick up their daughter Franny from summer camp. This tragedy left Win with severe emotional scars, making him both distant and overprotective of his children.
