“Master” Movie: The Thrilling Caper of the Year
For the cinephiles who crave a thrilling ride, “Master” is one movie that should top their list. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Xavier Britto, this Tamil-language movie was released in January 2021 and has been creating quite a buzz ever since. It boasts of an ensemble cast including Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan, Andrea Jeremiah, and Arjun Das.
It is a story of intense rivalry between two men – JD (Vijay) and Bhavani (Vijay Sethupathi). JD is the charismatic leader of an organization for rehabilitated alcohol abusers while Bhavani is a cunning criminal’s mastermind. The two cross paths when JD wanders into a bar while investigating his organization’s missing members. A chance encounter between them sparks a cycle of events that ends up revealing some dark secrets from both their pasts.
What sets “Master” apart from other action thrillers is its nuanced characters and their motivations. JD, despite being the hero of the story, has his own demons to fight as he battles his addiction to alcohol. On the other hand, Bhavani isn’t all black either – his backstory shows how he had to claw his way up from poverty to become one of Chennai’s most feared gangsters.
One of the highlights of “Master” is undoubtedly its music score. Composed by Anirudh Ravichander, it has already become an instant hit amongst music lovers. Songs like “Vaathi Coming” and “Kutti Story” have been ruling charts across India since their release.
The film’s screenplay deserves special mention too for keeping us on the edge throughout. Its crisp editing by Philomin Raj doesn’t give us any breathing time as we get thrown from one action sequence to another.
Apart from earning critical acclaim, the film has also been a massive commercial success. It broke records on its opening day by grossing over 40 crores and went on to make more than 250 crores worldwide.
“Master” has also become a trendsetter in its own way. The dynamic camera work by Sathyan Sooryan and the clever use of visual effects make it stand out amongst other Tamil movies. It is one of the few films where we get to see Vijay Sethupathi as a menacing villain, which is a refreshing change from his usual roles as a hero.
The movie’s popularity can be gauged from the numerous memes that have come up on social media sites like Twitter and Instagram. It has even sparked off a dance challenge called “Vaathi Challenge,” where people recreate Vijay’s iconic dance steps from the song “Vaathi Coming.”
Criticism, however, has come in too. Some have pointed out how the characterizations of women in the movie aren’t well fleshed out enough. Malavika Mohanan’s character, for instance, seems underutilized compared to her male co-stars.
But this is not to say that “Master” doesn’t have its share of emotional moments too. There are scenes between JD and his mentor (played by Nassar) that tug at our heartstrings and show us how addiction can tear families apart.
Ultimately, what makes “Master” an engaging watch is its unpredictability- Lokesh Kanagaraj keeps us guessing as to what might happen next in this cat-and-mouse game between JD and Bhavani. The movie ends up being much more than just your average action flick; it delves into themes like redemption and self-forgiveness.
