Review

Oh, gentle readers, lend me your ears and let me speak of a most delightful movie that hath come to my attention. A tale of twelve companions, each with their own unique quirks and fancies, who embark on a journey that shall change their lives forever. This movie, hight Twelve Plus One, doth combine the wit and charm of the great bard himself with a modern-day twist.

The story doth begin with a group of acquaintances gathered together for a dinner party. As the night wears on, they all become intoxicated with the notion of embarking on an adventure together. They decide to play a game where each shall write down an item they wish to see or experience in Italy on a slip of paper. These slips are then placed into a hat and drawn at random, with the group agreeing to fulfill each other’s wishes.

Thus begins an epic journey through Italy filled with comedy, romance and adventure. Our protagonists find themselves in various situations such as climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa or being serenaded by gondoliers in Venice. Along the way they make new friends and encounter many obstacles.

The cast is nothing short of magnificent! Sharon Tate plays Christina, a blonde bombshell who captures everyone’s heart including that of Mario – played by Vittorio Gassman – one of their Italian companions who joins them on their travels.

My favorite character however must be Charlie – played by Terry-Thomas – whose constant banter and hilariously sarcastic comments bring life to every scene he is in. His delivery is impeccable and his character provides many moments of laughter that keep us engaged throughout the movie.

Not only does this film have memorable characters but it also has beautiful cinematography capturing some truly stunning views of Italy that take your breath away.

The score too is magical, ranging from delicate instrumentals to lively tunes that make you want to get up and dance along with the actors. The use of music also sets the tone for each scene and enhances the overall experience.

The dialogue is witty and charming – a hallmark of Shakespearean writing, with lines that stay with you even after the movie has ended. One of my favorites being when Mario says to Christina “My heart is like a singing bird that flies away. And every time it sings, it takes my breath away.”

Unfortunately, this movie was released posthumously for one of its lead actresses, Sharon Tate, who was tragically murdered by the Manson Family months before its release. This event cast a dark cloud over the film’s marketing and reception leading to an initially lukewarm reception. However, with its re-release in 1975, it gained a cult following and has since become a beloved classic.

In terms of awards, Twelve Plus One did not receive any major accolades but has stood the test of time as an unforgettable gem in cinematic history.

The production of this movie was not without its challenges however. With shooting taking place in various locations in Italy including Rome and Florence under challenging weather conditions, there were many obstacles to overcome but the end result speaks for itself.

The editing too deserves special mention as it manages to keep the audience engaged while seamlessly transitioning from one scene to another.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this delightful movie for those who seek adventure and laughter. It is a testament to Shakespeare’s enduring legacy combined with modern-day sensibilities that make it a timeless classic that warms your heart and fills you with joy. Forsooth!
