Review

Have you ever watched a movie that left you feeling completely mind-boggled, yet intrigued at the same time? Out of Blue is a film that does exactly that. Based on the detective novel, Night Train by Martin Amis, the movie tells the story of a female detective named Mike Hoolihan (Patricia Clarkson), who is tasked with investigating the murder of an astrophysicist.

The film opens with Hoolihan being called to the scene of the crime where she discovers the victim lying dead on her observatory floor. From that moment on, things start to get strange. The investigation takes Hoolihan down a rabbit hole of cosmic theories and philosophical musings.

The plot might sound like your typical murder mystery at first glance, but Out of Blue is anything but typical. It’s dark, moody and cerebral – a mixture between David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

What makes this movie so captivating is its ability to blend different genres together seamlessly. It’s not just a murder mystery – it’s a psychological thriller, science fiction and philosophical meditation all rolled into one. The filmmakers create an atmosphere that keeps you on edge throughout the entire runtime.

The cast is exceptional, led by Patricia Clarkson’s brilliant performance as Mike Hoolihan. She’s tough yet vulnerable at the same time – a character who has seen it all but still struggles with her own demons.

The supporting cast is no slouch either. James Caan plays Mike’s father figure who owns a bar and provides some comedic relief in certain scenes while Toby Jones delivers an outstanding performance as Professor Ian Strammi.

Director Carol Morley deserves credit for creating such an engrossing film. Her use of color, cinematography and editing all contribute to this movie’s unsettling tone. There are many memorable moments throughout Out of Blue – from Hoolihan’s haunting trip down memory lane to her surreal encounter with a homeless woman.

In terms of its popularity, Out of Blue might not be the most well-known movie out there, but it’s certainly worth your attention. It received mixed reviews when it premiered at the London Film Festival in 2018, but I think that’s partly because it’s a film that requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate.

One thing that sets this movie apart is its willingness to tackle bigger themes than your average crime procedural. From discussions about the nature of the universe to musings on how we perceive reality, Out of Blue doesn’t shy away from complex subjects. This is a movie that rewards careful viewing and contemplation.

All in all, Out of Blue is a film that pushes boundaries and challenges viewers to think beyond the surface level. It’s not afraid to take risks and try something new, and for that reason alone, I highly recommend it.
